Marine Biologist for San Mateo County Harbor District

Why I Am Running

As a marine biologist I have a great love and passion for San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

Fascination for the sea and its organisms is the reason that I earned a master's degree in marine biology. Applying my experience in protecting our environment, and in outreach and education, are the reasons that I am now running for the Harbor Commission.

For 15 years at the San Francisco Estuary Institute, I’ve studied human impacts on the ocean, particularly water quality in the Bay. I’ve also served as local president of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.

If you should honor me with your vote, I’ll work to improve habitat and water quality and ensure that local seafood going to supermarkets and restaurants is healthy and sustainable for future generations.

The fishing and boating community also deserves care and attention. Commercial fishing is still a difficult and risky endeavor, but our local fishermen manage their catch for a sustainable fishery. I’d like to help the hatchery release program at Pillar Point. I’d like to reduce excessive fees for wholesale fish. And of course I support the life-saving work of the Harbor Patrol.

All of this can be done in a fiscally responsible manner. The Harbor District has had a 20-30% budget deficit for the past several years, but upgrading the accounting systems and careful oversight can help the District save money and get back on track.
